Since its inauguration, the museum has tried to discover and promote promising young artists. To this end, the museum has implemented Kumho Young Artist, a competition program aimed at findingtalented artists since 2004.
This program aims to provide prospective artists, who have been chosen through a strict screening process, with an opportunity to hold their exhibitions at the museum. In the longer term, our purpose is to introduce a new chapter in the Korean contemporary art by showing new art worksfull of experimental spirit and potential demonstrated by these young artists.
Applicants to the program should be artists of Korean nationality who are under the age of 35 on the date of announcement. Artists are selected from all fields of art including two-dimensional, three-dimensional and multi-media art. The first screening process is done by the museum’s curatorial department and the second screening of portfolios is conducted by the theoreticians, artists and art-related journalists appointed by the museum. The candidates go through the final process of selection through studio visits and artist interviews. The museum has in the past selected young artists with the understanding that the selected candidate has the potential to find some common groundsamong thehighly heterogeneous group of market participants with differing requirements and needs, including, national and public art museums, private art museums, alternative exhibition spaces and smaller galleries. The number of artists to be selected is not limited given the goal of this program: offering each artist an opportunity to hold an exhibition of his or her own.
